California's highest major ski resort by base elevation at 7,800 feet — Kirkwood Mountain Resort runs 15 lifts on 2,000 acres of Sierra Nevada terrain on the Carson Pass, holds the driest in-bounds powder in California, and sits 35 miles south of South Lake Tahoe on Highway 88 with the Mokelumne Wilderness off the back ridges.
Kirkwood Mountain Resort sits at the head of Kirkwood Meadows on Highway 88, 35 miles south of South Lake Tahoe and at 7,800 feet of base elevation — the highest major ski-resort base in California. 15 lifts and 86 trails cover 2,000 acres with 2,000 vertical feet to a 9,800-foot summit; the Cornice Express, Wagon Wheel, and Sunrise chairs serve the famous double-black-diamond Carson Spur, while Snowkirk and Bunny chairs cover the family beginner zone. The Mokelumne Wilderness opens off the southwestern ridge, Caples Lake sits two miles east, and the 1864 Kirkwood Inn stagecoach stop runs as a year-round restaurant on the lake's western shore.
Our rentals concentrate inside the small Kirkwood Mountain Village — Timber Ridge, The Meadows, Sun Meadows, Base Camp, and Lodge at Kirkwood condos all walking distance to the lifts, with shared building amenities (heated pools, hot tubs, ski-storage lockers, fitness centers) included. Most are 1-to-3-bedroom condos sleeping 4–10. The Caples Lake side adds a smaller cabin set for guests who want the lakefront-and-quiet over the slopeside-and-walk.
