The 8,300-resident wind-sport-and-orchard seat of Hood River County 63 miles east of Portland — the Columbia River Gorge's world-famous windsurf-and-kiteboard launch at the Hood River Event Site and The Hook, Mt. Hood's 11,250-foot summit and three ski areas (Timberline, Meadows, Ski Bowl) 35 miles south, the 35-mile Hood River Fruit Loop drive through 30+ orchards and cideries, the Mt. Hood Railroad's restored 1906 scenic train, and a downtown brewery row anchored by pFriem Family Brewers, Full Sail Brewing, and Double Mountain Brewery.
Hood River sits where the Hood River meets the Columbia at the western entrance to the Columbia River Gorge, 63 miles east of Portland and 35 miles north of Mt. Hood's 11,250-foot summit. The Gorge's reliable east-west thermal wind (15–35 knots May–September) made Hood River the global capital of windsurfing in the 1980s and the kiteboarding-and-wing-foil capital today; the Hood River Event Site below the Hood River Bridge, The Hook on the river-east side, and Swell City and Stevenson on the Washington side host the international rig-and-foil scene. Downtown Hood River's two-block walkable Cascade-and-1st-street strip has pFriem Family Brewers' brewpub on the riverfront waterfront park, Full Sail Brewing's tasting room and pub on Columbia Street (the original 1987 brewery), Double Mountain Brewery on Fourth, the Volstead Theatre's first-run cinema, and the Mt. Hood Railroad's Hood River Depot for the 4-hour Parkdale-and-back scenic train. South of town the 35-mile Hood River Fruit Loop scenic drive threads 30+ working orchards (Apple Valley Country Store, Packer Orchards, Mt. View Orchards), U-pick cideries (Hood Crest, FOX-Tail, Wy'East), and lavender farms in Pine Grove and Parkdale. Mt. Hood's three ski areas — Timberline Lodge with year-round Palmer-snowfield skiing, Mt. Hood Meadows' 2,150 acres on the southeast face, and Mt. Hood Ski Bowl's night-skiing — are 35–45 minutes south on OR-35.
Our Hood River inventory leans Heights-neighborhood pool-and-hot-tub homes on the bluff above downtown with Columbia River and Washington-side views, downtown lofts and condos within walking distance of pFriem and Full Sail, river-adjacent townhomes near the Event Site for windsurf-and-kite weeks, and a small set of Parkdale-and-Pine-Grove orchard-side homes 14 miles south on the Fruit Loop with Mt. Hood views. Portland International (PDX) is 65 miles west, 75 minutes — the closest commercial airport with non-stops worldwide, the practical choice for any Hood River trip. Most rentals enforce 2-night minimums; July and August windsurf-peak weeks and December–March ski weekends often run 3-night minimums; many east-side properties offer monthly stays at a steep discount.
