Maui Tropical Plantation is a 60-acre working farm in central Maui's Waikapū Valley, at the foot of the West Maui Mountains, that doubles as a visitor showcase of the island's agriculture. The signature experience is the narrated Tropical Express tram, a 40-minute ride through fields of pineapple, sugarcane, coffee, cacao, mango, papaya, and other island crops with stops for a coconut-husking demonstration. The grounds — free to wander — also hold a large lily-pad lagoon, a country store, the farm-to-table Mill House restaurant and Kumu Farms market stand, and a zipline course over the valley, making it an easy half-day on the way between Kahului and West Maui.
Maui Tropical Plantation sits in Waikapū Valley in the island's central isthmus, with the green West Maui Mountains rising right behind it. It opened in 1984 to show visitors how the island's crops actually grow, and it has stayed a genuinely working farm — much of the produce served at its own restaurant and sold at the on-site Kumu Farms stand is grown on the property. The centerpiece is the Tropical Express, a narrated tram that loops about 40 minutes through fields of pineapple, sugarcane, coffee, cacao, mango, papaya, bananas, and flowers, with a guide explaining each crop and a stop for the classic coconut-husking demonstration.
You don't have to ride the tram to enjoy the place, though — the grounds are free. A large lily-pad lagoon sits at the center, ringed by lawns and the plantation's plumeria and tropical plantings, with a country store, the Kumu Farms market, and the well-regarded farm-to-table Mill House restaurant and Cookhouse. For more adventure, a zipline course runs over the valley. Because it's right on the highway between Kahului, Wailuku, and the West Maui resorts, it makes an easy half-day or a relaxed lunch stop, and it pairs naturally with a visit to nearby ʻĪao Valley and the Kepaniwai gardens just up the road in Wailuku.
A short loop through the exhibits, encounters, and shows that make this stop worth a half-day on its own.
A narrated 40-minute tram loops through fields of pineapple, sugarcane, coffee, cacao, mango, papaya, and flowers, with a guide on each crop and a stop for the signature coconut-husking demonstration.
This is a genuine 60-acre working farm, not a re-creation — much of what's grown here supplies the on-site restaurant and the Kumu Farms market stand with island produce.
A large lily-pad lagoon anchors the free grounds, ringed by lawns, plumeria, and tropical plantings — a relaxed place to wander, picnic, or shop without a ticket.
The farm-to-table Mill House restaurant and Cookhouse and the Kumu Farms market sit on the grounds, serving and selling produce grown on the property and around central Maui.
A zipline course strings cables over the plantation and the Waikapū Valley with the West Maui Mountains as backdrop — booked separately from the tram for an added adventure.
