Welcome to LanaiThe Pineapple Isle. The snorkel crescent of Hulopoe Bay, the Puu Pehe sea stack offshore, the otherworldly red rock of Keahiakawelo, and Lanai City — a plantation town of Cook pines and tin-roof cottages around Dole Park, nine miles uphill from the coast.

Lanai is the smallest of the inhabited islands you can visit — eighteen miles across, one town, and barely thirty miles of pavement. Lanai City sits in the cool 1,600-foot uplands; the resorts and the best swimming are down at Manele and Hulopoe on the south coast; and the rest of the island, from the Garden of the Gods to Shipwreck Beach, is reached on red-dirt four-wheel-drive roads.
