Straddling the California–Nevada state line above South Lake Tahoe, Heavenly tops out at 10,067 feet — the highest of the Tahoe resorts. In summer the Heavenly Gondola climbs 2.4 miles to the 9,123-foot Observation Deck and the Epic Discovery adventure park: the gravity-powered Ridge Rider Mountain Coaster, the 1,000-foot Hot Shot Zip Line, the 25-foot Granite Peak Climbing Wall, gem panning, summer tubing, and a network of lift-served alpine hiking trails reached via the Tamarack Express chair.
Heavenly Mountain Resort spreads 4,800 acres across the California–Nevada border directly above South Lake Tahoe, with a peak elevation of 10,067 feet — the highest of any Tahoe resort. Owned by Vail Resorts since 2002, it is best known for winter skiing across 97 runs and 30 lifts, but the mountain reopens each summer as one of Tahoe's signature warm-weather attractions, anchored by the Heavenly Gondola rising straight from the village at Heavenly Village.
The 2.4-mile gondola climbs to the Observation Deck at 9,123 feet, where deep-blue lake views open to the west and high-desert ridges roll east into Nevada. From there the Epic Discovery adventure park runs the gravity-powered Ridge Rider Mountain Coaster through forest and granite, the four-line Hot Shot Zip Line (1,000 feet at up to 40 mph), the 25-foot Granite Peak Climbing Wall with 15 routes and a 35-foot quick-jump, gem panning, and a snowless summer tubing hill. Lift-served hiking trails leave from the top of the Tamarack Express chair, included with a Scenic Gondola ticket.
Plan to ride up mid-morning before afternoon thunderheads build over the Sierra crest, and pack a layer — the deck sits nearly a mile above the lake and runs 15–20 degrees cooler than the shore. The gondola base is a two-minute walk from the South Lake Tahoe casino corridor and the Heavenly Village shops, so it pairs easily with a beach morning at nearby Lakeside or Nevada Beach. Activity opening dates shift with snowmelt; check the resort calendar before committing to the coaster or zip line.
A short loop through the exhibits, encounters, and shows that make this stop worth a half-day on its own.
A 2.4-mile cabin ride climbing from Heavenly Village to the 9,123-foot Observation Deck, with a mid-station stop for photos, a latte at Café Blue, and the Gondola Sports shop. Round-trip scenic tickets run $72 adult; free for Epic Pass holders (excluding Epic Day Pass).
A gravity-powered alpine coaster that threads through forest and natural rock formations, with two-rider sleds. Drivers must be at least 16 and between 54 and 84 inches tall; closed-toe athletic shoes required. Single rides from $30.
A 1,000-foot zip line with four parallel lines reaching up to 40 mph, so families and friends can race side by side. Riders must be 8 or older, at least 42 inches tall, and 55–275 pounds. Typically opens around June 20 each summer.
A 25-foot man-made rock wall with 15 defined routes across difficulty levels, inspired by the Sierra Nevada's legendary climbing. Its signature feature is the quick-jump, a 35-foot rapid descent reached by climbing the Goat Trail.
From the top of the gondola, ride the Tamarack Express chair — included with a Scenic Gondola ticket — to a network of beginner-to-expert trails through high alpine terrain. Routes open progressively through June and July as the snow melts and the ground dries.
An interactive panning station that recreates the Gold Rush sluicing that began in El Dorado County, where Heavenly sits. Hunt through the water for unique gems, fossils, and arrowheads — whatever you find, you keep. A favorite with younger kids.
A free Sunday-morning yoga series at 10 AM on the Blue Sky Terrace, starting in early July. Included with a 2025–26 season pass or any Scenic Gondola ticket — sunrise-cool alpine air, lake views, and no extra charge.
Summer operations run late May through late September, daily 10 AM – 5 PM from mid-June through Labor Day, then weekends only into late September. Opening and individual activity dates depend on snowmelt — the climbing wall, zip line, and summer tubing typically open in stages from late June. Buy Gondola and Epic Discovery tickets online in advance; on-mountain windows sell out on July and August weekends.
Note · Last uphill gondola boarding is at 4:00 PM; the final downhill cabin leaves the top around 5:30 PM. Hiking-trail access via the Tamarack Express chair closes at 4:30 PM.
Per-person admission. Buy in advance to skip the gate line.
Café Blue at the mid-station and the Tamarack Lodge at the top serve grab-and-go food. The free Mountaintop Yoga Series runs Sundays at 10 AM on the Blue Sky Terrace from early July. Epic Mountain Rewards members save 20% on bike rentals and on-mountain food.
