Santa Clara

St. George's Swiss-pioneer western neighbor — the Snow Canyon back-door entrance, the Tuacahn Amphitheatre, and quieter desert evenings.

A Field Guide

What Santa Clara actually feels like.

Santa Clara is the Swiss-pioneer settlement 4 miles west of St. George — founded 1854 by Mormon converts from the Swiss Alps, with the original Jacob Hamblin Home (1862) still standing on Santa Clara Drive and the Pioneer Park's stone-and-adobe heritage cottages preserved at the town center. The modern draw is geographic: Snow Canyon State Park's southern entrance is just out of town, the Tuacahn Amphitheatre's red-rock box-canyon stage is 3 miles north in Ivins, and Black Desert Resort's Tom Weiskopf PGA-Tour course is 3 minutes east. Santa Clara's vacation-rental footprint is small — most inventory in the area falls under the broader St. George corridor — but the town itself is the quietest red-rock evening in Washington County, with a tree-shaded Santa Clara River walk and the lowest summer temperatures in the immediate St. George area thanks to the river microclimate.

Activities in Santa Clara

Snow Canyon State Park's southern back-gate entrance, the Black Desert Resort PGA-Tour course, the Tuacahn Amphitheatre, and the Santa Clara River walking trail.

01

Snow Canyon State Park (south entrance)

7,400 acres of red and white Navajo sandstone, petrified sand dunes, and lava tubes. Petrified Dunes, Jenny's Canyon, and the West Canyon Overlook are the headline trails. Santa Clara is the closest town to the southern entrance, which usually has the shortest morning ranger-station line.

02

Black Desert Resort Golf

Tom Weiskopf's 2023 black-lava-and-red-rock layout — the only PGA Tour-host course in Southern Utah (the Black Desert Championship debuted October 2024). Public greens fees, Sage Cottages on-site, and a Tour-grade practice range. Three minutes east of Santa Clara.

03

Tuacahn Amphitheatre (5 min north, Ivins)

A 2,000-seat outdoor theater in a 1,500-foot red-rock box canyon — Broadway-touring musicals on a lava-rock backdrop, April through October. Tickets $35–$95.

04

Santa Clara River Walking Trail

A free 4-mile riverfront trail through cottonwood and willow groves connecting Santa Clara to Ivins — the locals' nightly stroll, dog-friendly, and one of the lowest-temperature evening walks in the immediate St. George area.

05

Red Mountain Resort Spa (5 min north)

A high-end destination spa at the foot of Snow Canyon — day-pass treatments, four pools, a hammam-style steam circuit. Treatments $160–$350; reserve a week ahead.

Trip Planning, Answered

Best season, the SGU vs LAS airport question, whether Santa Clara is right for your trip vs St. George downtown.

Should I book Santa Clara or St. George?
Santa Clara is the quieter Snow-Canyon-and-Tuacahn pick, 4 miles west of downtown St. George. Better for golfers (Black Desert is 3 minutes), Tuacahn-heavy trips (5 minutes north), and morning Snow Canyon access via the south entrance. St. George's downtown puts you closer to Tabernacle Street dining and the larger lagoon-pool resort communities (Desert Color, The Ledges). The two are an 8-minute drive apart.
When is the best time to visit Santa Clara?
October through May is the prime window — 60–80°F days, low humidity. Santa Clara's river microclimate runs 3–5°F cooler than downtown St. George in summer evenings. Tuacahn's outdoor season runs April through October; if you're seeing a show, plan around that calendar.
What's the closest airport to Santa Clara?
St. George Regional Airport (SGU) is 15 minutes east — daily Delta and United flights. Las Vegas Harry Reid (LAS) is 2 hours south on I-15. Most Santa Clara visitors fly LAS for the wider flight selection.
Do I need a car in Santa Clara?
Yes — Santa Clara is car-dependent and Snow Canyon, Tuacahn, and the day-trip menu all require driving. Most rentals include attached garages.
How much does a Santa Clara vacation rental cost?
Santa Clara inventory is small and prices follow the St. George corridor — $150–$300 for a 2- or 3-bedroom and $400–$1,200 for 5+ bedroom homes with private pools. Spring break and Easter are the most expensive — book six months ahead.
