Hurricane

Sand Hollow's red-rock reservoir, the Sand Mountain ATV dunes, and a 30-minute Zion National Park gateway.

A Field Guide

What Hurricane actually feels like.

Hurricane (locals say 'HUR-ah-kn,' not 'HUR-i-cane') is the gateway town between St. George's red-rock corridor and Zion National Park — twenty miles south of the park's busy South Entrance, five miles north of Sand Hollow's red-rock reservoir, and the staging point for the Sand Mountain dune system that makes Washington County the ATV capital of the West. The town itself runs on State Street's pioneer-era brick — fruit-stand cafes, the historic Hurricane Theatre, and the Pah Tempe hot springs at the canyon mouth — but the trip vibe is centrifugal: every morning you're choosing between Zion's Narrows shuttle line, a Sand Hollow boat day, a Sand Mountain ATV ride, or a Coral Cliffs / Sky Mountain golf round. Hurricane's rentals lean toward Dixie Springs, Sand Hollow Resort, Coral Cliffs Estates, and the new Long Valley community — clusters that all sit within ten miles of the reservoir, with private pools and hot tubs more common than at any other gateway town to the park.

ATVs, boating, and Zion

Activities in Hurricane

Sand Hollow's red-rock reservoir, the Sand Mountain dune system, the Zion shuttle from Springdale, and a year-round desert that books harder in spring and fall than summer.

01

Sand Hollow State Park

1,300-acre red-rock reservoir and 6,000-acre Sand Mountain dune complex 5 miles east of town. Boat ramps, a paddleboard rental marina, the warmest spring water in Utah, and one of the country's most-photographed reservoirs (think Lake Powell red rock, but bookable for an afternoon). About $15 per vehicle.

02

Sand Mountain ATV / UTV Dunes

6,000 acres of red sand bordered by Sand Hollow — Hurricane is the rental and staging hub for the entire system. Local outfitters (ATV Adventures, ATV and Jeep Adventures) drop UTVs to your rental for $300–$600/day. The most-recommended Hurricane afternoon plan once the desert cools.

03

Zion National Park (25 min)

The Mighty 5's most-visited park — Narrows hike up the Virgin River, Angels Landing's chained scramble, and the Pa'rus Trail's stroller-friendly canyon floor. Mandatory Springdale shuttle April–November; private cars OK in winter. Hurricane is the cheaper long-stay alternative to Springdale lodging.

04

Pah Tempe Hot Springs (Mineral Springs)

A series of 105°F mineral pools at the mouth of the Virgin River canyon, just outside town — soak in the warm sulfur springs with red-cliff views overhead. Hours and access vary; check ahead. The locals' winter-evening alternative to Sand Hollow.

05

Sky Mountain Golf Course

An 18-hole municipal course threaded through red-rock outcrops with Pine Valley Mountain views. The canonical southern-Utah scenic round at a fraction of the resort price — $50–$80 greens fees, walkable layout, friendly desert bighorn-sheep sightings on the back nine.

06

Sand Hollow Resort Golf Club

The John Fought Championship Course at Sand Hollow Resort — Golf Magazine ranked it the #1 public course in Utah. Tour-grade conditioning, red-rock backdrops, and a 9-hole short course attached. Greens fees $135–$220 depending on season.

07

Quail Creek Reservoir

A smaller, quieter alternative to Sand Hollow 4 miles west of Hurricane — paddleboard, kayak, and a dispersed-beach culture without the marina infrastructure. The locals' weekday morning swim before the wind picks up. About $10 entry.

08

Smithsonian Butte / Gooseberry Mesa Mountain Biking

Gooseberry Mesa, 25 minutes east of Hurricane on SR-59, is the most-recommended slickrock-mountain-bike destination in Southern Utah outside Moab. Free, primitive parking; 25+ miles of looping singletrack on Navajo sandstone. Best November–April.

Hurricane is the rare Zion-gateway town where you can drop the kids at Sand Hollow's calm-water beach at 9 a.m., be on the Pa'rus Trail by Springdale at 11, and have your ATVs delivered to the rental for a sunset Sand Mountain run — all without the town ever feeling like a checkpoint between bigger places.

Trip Planning, Answered

Best season, the SGU vs LAS airport question, where to stay (Sand Hollow Resort, Dixie Springs, Coral Cliffs, downtown), Zion logistics, and what a Hurricane week actually costs.

When is the best time to visit Hurricane?
October through May is the prime window — 60–80°F days, the only stretch when the Zion shuttle line is reasonable, and the best for Sand Hollow's calm spring and fall water. Spring (March–April) is the busiest non-summer season — Easter and St. George Marathon weekends sell out. Summer (June–August) hits 100–110°F by 11 a.m.; locals run dawn ATV rides and evening boats, but most travelers leave for cooler altitude. Fall (September–October) is the hidden best — the dunes warm up perfectly for ATV and the Zion crowds thin out.
What's the closest airport to Hurricane?
St. George Regional Airport (SGU) is 20 miles west — daily Delta flights to Salt Lake City, United to Denver, and seasonal Sun Country and Allegiant runs. Las Vegas Harry Reid (LAS) is 2:10 down I-15 — wider flight selection and lower fares, especially on red-eye departures. Most Hurricane visitors fly LAS and rent at the airport; the SR-9 / I-15 drive is straightforward, no mountain passes.
How long should I stay in Hurricane?
A long weekend (3–4 nights) covers Zion, Sand Hollow, and one ATV afternoon. Five to seven nights opens Bryce, Gooseberry Mesa biking, or the North Rim as second-day-trips. Spring-break and Easter typically require a 4-night minimum at Sand Hollow Resort and Dixie Springs. For a Zion-heavy trip, splitting one Springdale night cuts the morning shuttle-line and Narrows-launch wait significantly.
Where should I stay in Hurricane?
Sand Hollow Resort sits on the reservoir's south shore — the closest you get to Sand Hollow without camping, with John Fought course homes and ATV staging. Dixie Springs is the family-rental neighborhood north of the reservoir — splash pads, pickleball, 7-minute drives to the entrance. Coral Cliffs Estates holds the larger pool homes inside town. The Coral Canyon corridor crosses into Washington City for the value-tier golf-and-pool community. All four cluster within 15 minutes of Sand Hollow.
Can I rent ATVs and have them delivered?
Yes — Hurricane is the ATV-rental hub for Washington County. Local outfitters (ATV Adventures, ATV and Jeep Adventures, Sand Hollow Adventure) deliver UTVs and ATVs directly to your rental and stage them on the property's parking pad or trailer slab. Day rates run $300–$600 depending on machine; multi-day discounts are common. Most of our properties include attached garages or RV-pad parking.
Do I need a car in Hurricane?
Yes — Hurricane is car-dependent and Zion, Sand Hollow, and the day-trip menu all require driving. The Zion shuttle from Springdale handles inside-the-park transit April–November; you drive to Springdale (25 min), park, and ride. Most rentals include attached garages and ATV-trailer parking — confirm at booking if you're hauling toys.
What's the weather like in Hurricane?
Hurricane sits at 3,250 feet — 200 feet higher than St. George — which makes summer days marginally cooler and winter nights marginally colder. Winter (December–February) averages 55–65°F days and 30–40°F nights with rare hard freezes. Spring and fall hit 70–85°F with low humidity. Summer (June–August) runs 100–108°F by midday. Rain is rare year-round (8 inches/year); the desert thunderstorm season runs July through early September.
How much does a Hurricane vacation rental cost?
Nightly rates run $150–$300 for a 2- or 3-bedroom condo and $400–$1,400 for 5+ bedroom homes with private pools and ATV-pad parking. Spring break and Easter are the most expensive — book six months ahead. Summer rates drop 25–35%. Sand Hollow Resort and the larger ATV-friendly homes typically require a 3–4 night minimum.
