The Garden City Beach Guide

Garden City Beach

Three miles of Atlantic strand between Surfside Beach and Murrells Inlet — the oceanfront 690-foot Garden City Pier, Sam's Corner soft-serve, and a working family-condo strand without the high-rise density of Myrtle Beach proper.

A Field Guide

What Garden City Beach actually feels like.

An unincorporated three-mile beach community on the southern Grand Strand between the Surfside Beach line at Melody Lane to the north and the Murrells Inlet jetty to the south — Garden City Beach is built around the 690-foot oceanfront Garden City Pier (rebuilt and reopened in 2024 after the 2022 fire), the 1948-era Sam's Corner walk-up snack stand at the pier's foot, and a working strand of mid-rise oceanfront condo towers (Waters Edge Resort, Royal Garden, Atlantica) that house most of the 42-rental inventory. The Murrells Inlet MarshWalk is a five-minute drive south on US-17 Business.

What to do on the strand

Activities at Garden City Beach

Walk the rebuilt Garden City Pier, ride the Sand Dollar's open-air deck on a summer evening, ride the Wild Water & Wheels lazy river a mile inland, and day-trip the Murrells Inlet MarshWalk five minutes south for dinner.

The Garden City Pier
01

The Garden City Pier

The 690-foot oceanfront pier at the foot of South Waccamaw Drive — rebuilt and reopened in 2024 after the November 2022 fire destroyed the 1948 original. Day-pass fishing $10; walk-on $2. The Sand Dollar Bar at the deck end runs live music seven nights a week through the summer; the family arcade and the rebuilt Sam's Corner snack stand both reopened with the new pier. The 4 a.m. king-mackerel run is the locals' summer ritual.

02

Walk the Three-Mile Strand

The Atlantic strand runs continuously three miles from the Surfside Beach line at Melody Lane south to the Murrells Inlet jetty — flat, wide, and one of the lowest-density family-strand sections of the Grand Strand. The morning low-tide window before 10 a.m. is the locals' walking hour. The Pier sits at the middle; the south end past Atlantica Resort thins out toward the inlet jetty.

03

Ride the Sand Dollar Deck

The rebuilt Sand Dollar Bar & Grill on the new Garden City Pier — open-air ocean-deck table, a full bar, the live-music stage seven nights a week from May through October, and the sunset cocktail ritual that defines the southern Grand Strand's summer. Walk-in only; the deck fills at 6 most summer evenings.

04

Day-Trip the Murrells Inlet MarshWalk

Five minutes south on US-17 Business — the half-mile elevated boardwalk along the salt-marsh creek with eight working-waterfront seafood houses (Drunken Jack's, Wahoo's, Bovine's, Dead Dog Saloon, Wicked Tuna, Crazy Sister, Gilligan's, Bubba Love Shak), the Veterans Pier shrimp-boat fleet, and live music seven nights a week. The classic Garden City dinner-and-walk evening.

05

Wild Water & Wheels

The 25-acre water-and-amusement park a mile inland on Highway 17 Business — 36 water slides, a wave pool, lazy river, go-kart track, and a kiddie zone. Day-passes around $40; open mid-May through Labor Day. The southern Grand Strand's classic kid-splurge day, walking-distance from the Waters Edge Resort cluster.

06

Brookgreen Gardens & Huntington Beach State Park

Ten minutes south on US-17 — Anna Hyatt Huntington's 9,100-acre former rice plantation with 2,000+ figurative bronzes and the Lowcountry-native zoo at Brookgreen, plus the 2,500-acre Huntington Beach State Park across US-17 with the Atalaya Castle ruin and three miles of undeveloped strand. The local-classic full-day off the strand. $20 + $8 entry.

07

Garden City Pier Reopening Festival (April)

The annual reopening-of-the-summer festival on the pier-block — vendor stalls, three live-music stages on the new Sand Dollar deck, the city's biggest pier-fishing tournament, and a fireworks finale over the ocean. Free entry; the local Pier-rebuild celebration since 2024. The October "Pier-Down" closing-of-the-season Halloween block party is the smaller-but-better-music sister event.

Garden City Beach is what the Grand Strand looked like in 1985 — the Pier rebuilt itself the same shape after the 2022 fire, Sam's Corner still serves the same soft-serve in the same paper cone, and the families who rented Waters Edge condos in 1990 have grandkids checking into the same units now. It's the strand's most-stable family beach.

Trip Planning, Answered

How Garden City Beach differs from Surfside and Murrells Inlet, the MYR airport pick, where to stay (Waters Edge dominates the inventory), and what a Garden City week actually costs.

How is Garden City Beach different from Surfside Beach and Murrells Inlet?
Three beach communities, three different identities. Surfside Beach (north of Garden City) is the trademarked "Family Beach" with strict three-story building cap, no-glass-bottle and no-thong ordinances, and a strong family-festival programming. Garden City Beach is unincorporated, has the rebuilt 690-foot oceanfront Pier, and is dominated by the working oceanfront condo towers (Waters Edge, Royal Garden, Atlantica) — slightly more nightlife than Surfside, less family-rule-driven. Murrells Inlet (south of Garden City) is the salt-marsh fishing-village identity with the half-mile MarshWalk and the eight seafood houses — almost no beach-side lodging, all the dining-and-live-music. A 5-minute drive separates the three.
When is the best time to visit Garden City Beach?
Memorial Day through Labor Day is the family-week peak — daytime highs of 85–92°F, water temps in the upper 70s to low 80s, and the busiest sand. Locals favor late April through early June and September through mid-October — water still hits the mid-70s, daytime highs of 75–85°F, and rates 25–35% below summer. The Pier Reopening Festival in April and the Pier-Down October weekend are the highest-occupancy regular weekends since the 2024 reopening; book three months out. November through March is mild but cool — golf weather, beach walks, and oyster season at the Murrells Inlet MarshWalk.
What's the closest airport to Garden City Beach?
Myrtle Beach International (MYR) is the closest at 9 miles north — about a 15-minute drive on US-17. MYR has direct service from most East Coast hubs and Allegiant routes from the Midwest. Wilmington International (ILM) is 95 miles north — only worth considering with a wide fare gap. Charleston International (CHS) is 90 miles south.
Where should I stay in Garden City Beach?
Waters Edge Resort is the dominant complex — most of the 42-rental Garden City inventory sits here, with on-site beach bar, café, and indoor/outdoor pools. The smaller Duneside cluster is at the north pier line, walking distance to the Garden City Pier and Sam's Corner. Royal Garden Resort (cataloged under Murrells Inlet on RedAwning's main site) is the 16-story oceanfront tower a half-mile south. The Inlet Pointe peninsula at the very south end of Garden City is the quietest stretch, closest to the Murrells Inlet jetty.
How long should I stay at Garden City Beach?
Waters Edge Resort condos accept 3-night minimums year-round and are the easier weekend fit; some require 7-night minimums during peak summer (Memorial Day–Labor Day). Off-season (March–May, October–November) most rentals relax to 2–3-night minimums. Long weekends pair well with a Brookgreen Gardens day, a Murrells Inlet MarshWalk dinner, and a Pawleys Island afternoon. Six-week-out booking is the right window for summer; 2–3 months for the April Pier Festival weekend.
Is Garden City Beach good for families?
Yes — the rebuilt 690-foot Garden City Pier (with the family arcade and Sand Dollar bar deck), Sam's Corner soft-serve, the Wild Water & Wheels park a mile inland, the lifeguarded summer strand, the Waters Edge Resort's indoor and outdoor pools, and the five-minute drive south to the Murrells Inlet MarshWalk for kid-friendly seafood-house dinners all anchor a low-key family week. Note: Garden City has no boardwalk (that's at Myrtle Beach proper, twenty minutes north) and no big amusement park (that's Family Kingdom, also at Myrtle Beach).
How much does a Garden City Beach vacation rental cost?
Off-season (November–March), 1-bedroom Waters Edge condos run $90–$170 a night; 2-bedroom condos $130–$220. Shoulder season (April–May, September–October), 1-bedroom $140–$240; 2–3-bedroom $180–$400. Peak summer (June 15–August 15), 1-bedroom oceanfront condos run $160–$285 a night, 2-bedroom condos $220–$400, 3-bedroom condos $400–$650. High-floor end units typically run 15–20% more than the lower-floor equivalents. Book by mid-March for July; by May for the April Pier Festival weekend.
Are pets allowed at Garden City Beach vacation rentals?
Most of the high-rise oceanfront resort condos at Waters Edge Resort and Royal Garden Resort do NOT allow pets. The smaller Duneside complex and some of the older oceanfront stilted houses (south of Pier) have occasional pet-friendly units. For pet-friendly inventory, look fifteen minutes north at Surfside Beach or twenty minutes south at Pawleys Island (True Blue Golf Resort). Garden City Beach itself allows leashed dogs on the strand year-round; from May 1 through Labor Day, dogs are restricted to before 9 a.m. and after 5 p.m. on the sand.
Was the Garden City Pier really destroyed?
Yes. The original 1948 Garden City Pier caught fire on the night of November 28, 2022 — the cause was never officially determined. The fire destroyed roughly 200 feet of the deck, the original Sand Dollar bar, the arcade, and the Sam's Corner snack stand at the foot of the pier. The pier was rebuilt to the same 690-foot length and reopened in spring 2024 with the Sand Dollar bar deck rebuilt, the family arcade restored, and Sam's Corner reopened with the original 1948-era recipe soft-serve and hot dogs intact. Locals will quote you the rebuild timeline with pride.
