Longboat Key sits between Anna Maria Island to the north and Lido Key/St. Armands Circle to the south — a single road (Gulf of Mexico Drive, GMD) runs the entire 12-mile length, with Longboat Pass at the north end and New Pass at the south. The Longboat Key Club anchors the southern third with three championship golf courses (Islandside, Harbourside North, Harbourside South), 38 Har-Tru tennis courts, six pickleball courts, the Resort at Longboat Key Club hotel, and the Longboat Key Club Marina. The Longbeach Village ("the Village") at the north end is the island's only walkable cluster — the Mar Vista Dockside on Sarasota Bay, Whitney's Beach restaurant on the Gulf side, and a single-block Sunday morning farmers market. The Sister Keys mangrove preserve runs the bay-side north of the Village; Joan M. Durante Park's bay-side trails sit mid-island.

Sarasota–Bradenton International (SRQ) is 25 minutes east; Tampa International (TPA) is 75 minutes north.
