Crested Butte holds the resort's 1,547-acre ski mountain at the base village (Mountaineer Square, the Plaza, the Grand Lodge) at 9,375 feet — the Headwall, Phoenix Bowl, and Spellbound Bowl give the resort its expert reputation, and the Red Lady Express chair runs from the village to the steeps in eight minutes. The historic downtown of Crested Butte sits three miles below the base on Elk Avenue, with restored 1880s Victorian brick storefronts and the official Wildflower Capital of Colorado designation that floods the meadows every July.
