Telluride sits at the floor of a glacial box canyon in the San Juan Mountains — a four-block historic mining town along Colorado Avenue at 8,750 feet, with the canyon walls rising 3,000 vertical feet on three sides and Bridal Veil Falls plunging 365 feet at the eastern dead-end. The free Mountain Village Gondola is the only public-transit gondola in North America: a 13-minute three-section lift over the 10,540-foot San Sophia Ridge connecting downtown Telluride to the Mountain Village ski-base. The Telluride Ski Resort's 2,000 acres climb from the gondola to Palmyra Peak's 13,150-foot lift-served summit — second-highest in North America.
