Frontier Town opened in 1959 on Route 611 just south of Ocean City, Maryland, when Bill Patten and Bill Pacey turned the Western-movie craze into a working frontier town. Today the 200-plus-acre complex pairs the original Western Theme Park — the staged Gunfight at the O.K. Corral, Golden Nugget Saloon can-can shows, Native American Village dancing, a daily cattle drive, and a coal-fired steam train — with a full water park (lazy river, activity pool, two flumes) and a high-ropes-and-zipline course added in 2013. The park runs seasonally, roughly mid-June through Labor Day.
Bill Patten and Bill Pacey built Frontier Town in 1959, when Western movies were packing Baltimore theaters and a real-life frontier town seemed like the obvious next step. It sits on Route 611 (Stephen Decatur Highway) just south of Ocean City, Maryland, on Sinepuxent Bay. The campground opened in 1963 and grew to nearly 600 sites; a Nor'easter leveled much of it in 1992 and it was rebuilt within a year. Sun Communities has owned the property since 2015, but the Western Theme Park still runs the same shows it opened with.
The day is built around live performances on Main Street and around the grounds. The Gunfight at the O.K. Corral uses the original script written by Guy Frederick in 1959 and runs twice a day; the Golden Nugget Saloon stages can-can shows; the Native American Village hosts dancing; and the morning opens with a flag-raising and a cattle drive. More than 40 animals — longhorn oxen, horses, goats, and chickens among them — live on the property, and a coal-fired steam train circles the grounds (and turns into a haunted ride each Halloween season).
Beyond the Western park, the 200-plus-acre complex includes a full water park with a lazy river, a stagecoach-themed activity pool, and two flumes, plus a High Ropes Adventure Park and zip lines installed in 2013 and a mini-golf course. The theme park and water park charge separate admission. The park is seasonal — plan for roughly mid-June through Labor Day — and pairs naturally with an Ocean City beach trip ten minutes up the road.
A short loop through the exhibits, encounters, and shows that make this stop worth a half-day on its own.
Frontier Town's signature show, staged on Main Street at 1:45 and 5:20 PM using the same script Guy Frederick wrote when the park opened in 1959. A jailbreak, a bank holdup, and a gun demo fill out the day's outlaw lineup.
Can-can dancers perform at the Golden Nugget Saloon at 12:55 and 4:05 PM — one of the two shows, alongside the gunfights, that longtime visitors return for year after year.
Traditional dancing is performed at the Native American Village twice daily. It's one of the quieter stops on the grounds and a counterpoint to the staged-shootout side of the park.
Each morning opens with a flag-raising and a cattle drive down Main Street, and a coal-fired steam train circles the grounds all day. Come October the train station becomes a haunted mansion and the train runs a Halloween Trail.
A separate-gate water park built out from the 1970s original: a lazy river, a kids' activity pool with a stagecoach slide in the center, and two water flumes. Open daily through the summer season.
An aerial ropes course and zip lines installed in 2013, open weekends into October after the main park closes for the season. The most physical activity on the property and a draw for older kids and teens.
More than 40 animals live on the property — longhorn oxen, horses, cows, goats, and chickens — some on loan for the summer, several year-round. They feature in the cattle drive and roam the petting areas between shows.
The Western Theme Park runs seasonally — roughly the second week of June through Labor Day — with gates on Main Street opening at 10:00 AM and the flag-raising at 10:20 AM. The water park is open daily in season; the mini-golf course and high-ropes course stay open weekends into October. The park is closed outside the summer season except for special events. Confirm the current calendar before visiting.
Note · The show schedule is the spine of the day: the Great Western Stampede at 11:00 AM, the OK Corral gunfights at 1:45 and 5:20 PM, and can-can shows at the Golden Nugget Saloon at 12:55 and 4:05 PM. Arrive by late morning to catch the full lineup before the 6:00 PM close.
Per-person admission. Buy in advance to skip the gate line.
The Western Theme Park and the Water Park are separate gates with separate admission; registered Frontier Town campers receive discounted rates. Prices vary by season and day — confirm current pricing on the official site before visiting.
