Standish

A Field Guide

What Standish actually feels like.

Standish is the Cumberland County town wrapped around the southwest shore of Sebago Lake — 10,000 residents spread across four villages (Standish, Sebago Lake, Steep Falls, and Bonny Eagle), the closest of the major Sebago shore towns to Portland (25 miles south on Route 25). The town's anchor is the 1893 Chicago World's Columbian Exposition Maine State Building — a Henry Vaughan-designed pavilion that Maine senator J.P. Bass had dismantled in Chicago and reassembled on Tory Hill in Standish in 1894. The Bonny Eagle Dam on the Saco River drives the town's southwestern edge; Watchic Lake is the smaller-lake summer-cottage colony on the eastern side; and the Sebago Lake Land Reserve trail system (1,100 acres of Loon Echo Land Trust preserve) runs through Standish on the north. Saint Joseph's College of Maine and its waterfront campus on Sebago's Lower Bay round out the town's identity.

The Lower Bay, Watchic Lake, and the Bonny Eagle Dam

Activities in Standish

Sebago Lake's Lower Bay swim coves, the Sebago Lake Land Reserve hiking preserve, the Bonny Eagle Dam Saco River walk, the Watchic Lake summer cottage colony, and the Saint Joseph's College waterfront trail system.

01

Sebago Lake Land Reserve

An 1,100-acre Loon Echo Land Trust preserve on the lake's southwest shore — 6 miles of singletrack hiking trail through old-growth white pine and beech hammock, with the Tiger Hill summit (840 feet) overlooking Sebago's Lower Bay. The trailhead at Whites Bridge Road off Route 35 is the local Standish foliage-week morning hike. Free; year-round.

02

Saint Joseph's College Lakeside Trails

The 444-acre Saint Joseph's College of Maine campus on Sebago's Lower Bay — public lakeside walking trails (about 9 miles of mowed-grass and woods loops), the Mercy Center waterfront chapel, and unobstructed Lower Bay views. Free; pedestrian access through the campus. The Standish-resident lakeside walk that doesn't require a state park fee.

03

Bonny Eagle Dam & Saco River Walk

The 1,650-foot Bonny Eagle Dam on the Saco River at Standish's southwestern edge — a 1911 Brookfield Power hydroelectric dam with a small Riverside Park on the south shore for the dam-overlook walk. The Saco River below the dam is the local trout-and-bass fishery (Maine inland license required); the dam-pool above is a popular kayak-and-paddleboard launch in summer. Free; daylight hours.

04

Watchic Lake

Standish's smaller second lake — 1.3 square miles on the town's east side, restricted to motorboats under 10 horsepower, and circled by a tight 1950s-built summer-cottage colony. The Watchic Lake Beach Club (small membership-and-day-pass dock) is the swim spot; the Watchic Lake Boat Launch on Watchic Lake Road is the public access. Quieter than Sebago and a five-minute drive from the Standish town green.

05

Sebago Lake Bass & Salmon Fishing

Sebago is the lake the landlocked salmon (Salmo salar sebago) is named after — the Lower Bay off Standish is the early-season togue (lake trout) ground, with smallmouth bass on the rocky points and the spring-run landlocked salmon following the smelt. Standish-based Sebago Lake Fishing Charters runs $400 half-day / $650 full-day for two anglers. A Maine inland fishing license is required ($43 for 3-day nonresident, $66 for 7-day).

06

Sebago Lake State Park

A 1,400-acre Cumberland County state park on the lake's northwest corner near Naples — the public mile of sand beach, a 250-site campground in the pines, the Songo River canoe launch, and 8 miles of moderate hiking trail. 25-minute drive from Standish. $8 nonresident vehicle entry; lifeguards on duty Memorial Day through Labor Day.

Standish is the Sebago shore town that gets mistaken for Naples when people are skipping the Causeway scene — closer to Portland, quieter on the lake, and with the strange World's Fair pavilion on Tory Hill that almost nobody visits. The week becomes a Lower Bay morning paddle, a Bonny Eagle Dam afternoon walk, an evening on the Standish Town Green with the Saturday market, and a Friday-night drive into Portland for oysters at Eventide.

Trip Planning, Answered

Best season for Standish, the Portland Jetport vs Boston Logan choice, neighborhoods (Lower Bay waterfront cottages, Watchic Lake summer colony, Steep Falls village homes), the Saturday-to-Saturday rental cycle, and the Standish-vs-Sebago decision.

When is the best time to visit Standish?
Mid-June through Labor Day is the main season — daytime highs of 78–84°F, Sebago Lake water at 72–76°F by mid-July, and the Watchic Lake cottage colony in full operation. Peak weeks are around July 4 and the first week of August. Foliage week (last week of September into the first week of October) is the quieter Standish — 60°F days, the lake still swimmable for the brave, and Pleasant Mountain leaf-color visible from the Sebago Lake Land Reserve ridgeline. May, early June, and late September are the off-season values, and skiing at Pleasant Mountain runs December through March.
What's the closest airport to Standish?
Portland Jetport (PWM) is 18 miles south, 25 minutes — the closest commercial airport, with Delta, American, United, JetBlue, Southwest, and Breeze service. Standish is the closest of the major Sebago shore towns to PWM, which is the local advantage for travelers chasing a short Saturday-changeover drive. Boston Logan (BOS) is 120 miles south, 2 hours — better international connectivity but a harder Saturday drive on Route 95.
How long should I stay in Standish?
Most Standish lakefront cottages run a Saturday-to-Saturday weekly minimum from late June through Labor Day — the Krainin Real Estate seven-night ritual that runs the whole Sebago shore. Off-season (May, June, September, October) most properties drop to 3-night minimums or 4- to 5-night blocks. The Watchic Lake cottages are more flexible — many are owner-rented and accept 3-night minimums even in July. A full week unlocks a Lower Bay swim day, a Bonny Eagle Dam paddle, a Naples Causeway evening, a Portland day trip, a Pleasant Mountain hike, and a Saint Joseph's College sunset walk.
Where should I stay in Standish?
Three flavors. Lower Bay waterfront cottages — pine-paneled three- and four-bedroom camps on Sebago's southwest shore with private docks, the bulk of our Standish inventory. Watchic Lake cottages — smaller-lake summer colony on Standish's east side, no powerboats over 10 hp, owner-rented and quieter. Steep Falls and Sebago Lake Village homes — off-water village houses for travelers who want the lake-day-trip with town walkability and lower nightly rates. The Standish town green and the Saturday Farmers' Market are walking distance from the village rentals.
How much does a Standish vacation rental cost?
Standish runs slightly lower than Naples and Sebago because it's farther from the Causeway summer scene. Off-season (May, October), 3-bedroom Lower Bay cottages run $165–$245 a night and 4-bedroom houses $245–$385. Shoulder (June, September), the same units run $215–$345 (3-bed) and $345–$525 (4-bed). Peak summer (July 4 through Labor Day), 3-bedroom waterfront cottages run $345–$525 and 4-bedroom houses $525–$895. Watchic Lake cottages run roughly 25% below the Sebago waterfront equivalents.
Standish or Sebago — what's the difference?
Both wrap around the same lake. Standish (southwest shore, Lower Bay, 25 minutes from Portland) is the quieter, more affordable, closer-to-Portland choice — better for travelers who plan to drive into Portland for dinner reservations 2–3 nights of the week. Sebago (west shore, on the deeper open lake, 30–35 minutes from Portland) is the bigger-lake feel, slightly more expensive, with closer access to Sebago Lake State Park's main beach. Both run the same Krainin Real Estate Saturday-to-Saturday cycle. The Watchic Lake cottages on Standish's east side are the smaller-lake-summer-camp alternative neither town quite matches.
Do I need a boat for Standish?
Optional. Most Lower Bay waterfront cottages have a private dock with a tied-up canoe or kayak; many include a small fishing skiff. For a power-boat day, the Sebago Lake Marina in Naples rents pontoon boats ($425/half-day) and ski boats; Sea Tow Sebago Lake covers the breakdown call. The Songo River Queen II paddlewheel cruise is the hands-off boat day. Watchic Lake's 10-hp limit means cottagers there mostly paddle. Bring a Maine inland fishing license for $43 (3-day) or $66 (7-day) if you plan to cast.
What's the weather like in Standish?
Cold-summer humid continental — the same as the rest of the Sebago shore. June averages 75°F days and 55°F nights. July and August are the swim-ready stretch at 80–84°F days and 65–70°F nights, with Sebago lake temps cresting 76°F. September drops fast — 70°F days, 50°F nights, lake at 65°F by month-end. Mosquitoes peak the first three weeks of June; black-fly season is mid-May through mid-June. Bring layers — Standish nights can drop to 60°F even in mid-July.
Are pets allowed on Standish vacation rentals?
About 30% of Standish inventory is pet-friendly — filter for "Pets OK." Pet fees typically run $125–$200 per stay, often with a 1- or 2-dog cap. Sebago Lake State Park's day-use beach is leashed-dogs-allowed in shoulder season but no dogs on the swim beach Memorial Day through Labor Day; the Sebago Lake Land Reserve trails allow leashed dogs year-round; Saint Joseph's College trails are leashed-dog-friendly outside campus events.
