The town was founded in 1630 by sugar merchants from Bristol and known locally as 'Little Bristol' through the 17th-century sugar trade — the chattel-house cores along Queen Street and Church Street still survive, the Arlington House Museum tells the trade-and-pirate history, and the Saint Peter's Parish Church on the hill above the bay anchors the village. Inland, the Cherry Tree Hill mahogany road climbs to the windward ridge with the only views in Barbados that take in both the Caribbean and Atlantic coasts at once; St. Nicholas Abbey, one of three surviving Jacobean mansions in the Americas, runs a working rum distillery in the cane fields just past the hill.
