A Field Guide

What McHenry actually feels like.

McHenry is the Garrett County resort village on the north shore of Deep Creek Lake — Maryland's only four-season ski-and-lake destination, three hours west of both Baltimore and DC and 2.5 hours southeast of Pittsburgh. Wisp Resort, the only ski mountain in the state, sits on Marsh Mountain right above the lake — 1,500 vertical feet, 132 trails on 172 skiable acres, and the connected 169-room Lodge at Wisp and McHenry Lodge resort hotel that anchors most of the local rental inventory. Deep Creek Lake (3,900 acres, 65 miles of shoreline) is Maryland's largest freshwater lake, fed by the Youghiogheny watershed; the Adventure Sports Center International (ASCI) on the mountain has the only Olympic-spec recirculating whitewater course in the eastern United States; and the 53-foot Muddy Creek Falls at Swallow Falls State Park is a 25-minute drive south. The Garrett State Forest, Deep Creek Lake State Park, and Herrington Manor State Park round out the Western Maryland public-land inventory.

The four-season Garrett County rotation

Wisp, Deep Creek, and Swallow Falls

Skiing and snow tubing at Wisp Resort, the Adventure Sports Center International whitewater course, summer boating and fishing on Deep Creek Lake, the 53-foot Muddy Creek Falls at Swallow Falls State Park, and the Lodestone Golf Course on Marsh Mountain.

01

Wisp Resort

Maryland's only ski mountain — 1,500 vertical feet, 132 trails on 172 skiable acres, and the only ski-in/ski-out resort in the state. Day passes around $99 in peak season; full-week ski school programs popular over Christmas and the Presidents' Day week. Summer operations include the 3,500-foot mountain coaster, scenic chairlift rides, and the Bavarian Lounge slope-side restaurant.

02

Deep Creek Lake

Maryland's largest freshwater lake — 3,900 acres, 65 miles of shoreline, and the centerpiece of Garrett County summer. Boat rentals at Bill's Marine Service and Aquatic Center ($395/half-day pontoon, $625/full-day ski boat), bass-and-walleye fishing the local guide tradition runs $400/half-day for two, and the Deep Creek Lake State Park public swim beach is the no-membership-needed lake afternoon. Maryland inland fishing license required.

03

Swallow Falls State Park

A 257-acre Garrett County state park 25 minutes south of McHenry — the 53-foot Muddy Creek Falls (Maryland's tallest waterfall), the half-mile Canyon Trail loop past Tolliver and Swallow Falls, and a 350-year-old hemlock grove. The do-it-once Garrett County waterfall hike. $5 nonresident vehicle fee Memorial Day through Labor Day.

04

Adventure Sports Center International

The only Olympic-spec recirculating whitewater course in the eastern United States — built on Marsh Mountain above Wisp Resort for the 2014 Whitewater World Championships. Public raft trips ($95 adult), kayak instruction, the on-mountain ropes course, and a 1,000-foot dual-zip-line. Open weekends mid-May through October. The McHenry adrenaline option that nobody expects in Maryland.

05

Deep Creek Lake State Park

A 1,820-acre Garrett County state park on the lake's southeast shore — a 700-foot public sand-and-gravel swim beach, a 112-site campground, the Discovery Center for kids, and 14 miles of moderate hiking trail. The Beckman's Loop hike is the local Saturday-morning lake-overlook walk. $5 nonresident vehicle fee in season.

06

Lodestone Golf Club at Wisp

Wisp Resort's 18-hole mountain golf course on Marsh Mountain — par-72, 7,000 yards, with elevation changes that surface a Deep Creek Lake panorama from the back nine. Around $89 weekday with cart for Lodge guests. The McHenry summer-week golf default.

McHenry is the only town in Maryland where the same week can include morning runs on the only ski mountain in the state, an afternoon mountain coaster ride, an evening lake dinner at Honi-Honi, and a Saturday paddle to Swallow Falls. The whole thing is more compact than people expect — Wisp Resort, the lake, the whitewater course, and the trails are all within 15 minutes of the Lodge.

Trip Planning, Answered

Best season for McHenry, the Pittsburgh vs DC airport choice, the Lodge at Wisp room types, what a Deep Creek week actually costs, and whether McHenry is a winter or summer destination.

When is the best time to visit McHenry?
McHenry is the rare four-season destination. Winter (mid-December through mid-March) is Wisp Resort's main ski season — daytime highs of 28–38°F, a base of 30–60 inches by mid-January, and the Christmas-week-and-Presidents'-Day-week peaks. Summer (Memorial Day through Labor Day) is the Deep Creek Lake season — 78–84°F days, 65°F lake water by mid-July, and the Honi-Honi lakefront crowd in full operation. Foliage week (the second week of October) is the locally-favorite shoulder week — 60°F days, the Garrett County hardwood color the only state-park-system-rivaling foliage in Maryland, and Wisp's mountain coaster still operating. April and November are the off-weeks at Wisp.
What's the closest airport to McHenry?
Pittsburgh International (PIT) is 130 miles northwest, 2 hours 30 minutes — the largest non-stop hub for McHenry with most major US carriers. Baltimore-Washington (BWI) is 175 miles east, 3 hours; Dulles (IAD) is 180 miles east, 3 hours. Most travelers drive in from the DC/Baltimore corridor — both routes run through Cumberland, MD on I-68. Pittsburgh is the better airport choice if you're flying.
How long should I stay in McHenry?
A long weekend (3–4 nights) covers a half-day at Wisp, a Deep Creek Lake afternoon (or a cross-country ski day at Herrington Manor in winter), an evening at Honi-Honi or the Bavarian Lounge, and a Saturday at Swallow Falls. A full week unlocks a Wisp ski week (or an ASCI whitewater day in summer), a Lodestone golf round, a Fallingwater day trip, an Ohiopyle whitewater Saturday, and time to settle into the McHenry rhythm of morning lift-line and afternoon lake. The Lodge runs flexible 1-night minimums in shoulder season, 2-night weekend minimums in peak.
Where should I stay in McHenry?
Our McHenry rental inventory is concentrated entirely at the Lodge at Wisp — six rentable Lodge room types from the 356-square-foot Deluxe studio to the 395-square-foot one-bedroom King. All units are in the connected Lodge at Wisp / McHenry Lodge resort hotel complex, with indoor pool, fitness center, and the Bavarian Lounge restaurant in-building. The Lodge is 5 minutes' walk from the Wisp lifts in winter, ski-in/ski-out from the building in deeper snow, and 8 minutes' drive from the Deep Creek Lake State Park beach.
How much does a McHenry vacation rental cost?
The Lodge at Wisp prices are tied to the Wisp resort calendar. Off-season (April, May, October–early December), studio and one-bedroom Lodge rooms run $145–$215 a night. Shoulder (June–September outside peak weeks, January–February midweek), the same units run $185–$265. Peak (Christmas-week, Presidents'-Day week, July 4 week, and the Garrett County Fair week the first week of August), $245–$365 with 2-night weekend minimums. The Lodge runs the flexible 1-night minimum stay outside those peak weeks, which makes McHenry a workable Maryland weekend destination.
Is McHenry better in winter or summer?
Both. Winter is Wisp's only-ski-mountain-in-Maryland claim — for skiers and snowboarders within a 4-hour radius, McHenry is the closest mountain. Summer is Deep Creek Lake's signature scene — the lake, Swallow Falls, the ASCI whitewater course, Lodestone golf, and the Honi-Honi waterfront. Locals will tell you the better-value weeks are summer (more activities, longer days) but the more-iconic-Maryland weeks are winter (the only place to ski in the state). Foliage week in October is the underrated shoulder choice.
Do I need a car at the Lodge?
Yes — McHenry is car-country. The Lodge is a 5-minute walk from the Wisp lifts, but every other destination (the Deep Creek Lake State Park beach, Swallow Falls, ASCI in summer, Honi-Honi, Fallingwater) requires a car. The Lodge has free parking; Wisp has a free shuttle in peak ski season but service is limited the rest of the year. Most McHenry rentals park at the building.
What's the weather like in McHenry?
Highland Maryland — colder and snowier than the rest of the state. Winter (December–March) averages 28–38°F days, 18–24°F nights, with a 30–60-inch ski-season base on Marsh Mountain by mid-January (the western Maryland Allegheny snow belt). Spring (April–May) runs 50–65°F. Summer (June–September) is 78–84°F days, 60–65°F nights — comfortably cooler than the DC/Baltimore corridor and the local mid-Atlantic summer escape. Foliage peaks the second week of October at 60°F days. Frost season runs October through April.
Are pets allowed at the Lodge?
The Lodge at Wisp runs a small pet-friendly room block — 6 rooms designated, $50/night pet fee, 1-dog max under 50 pounds. Reserve directly through Wisp Resort's pet-friendly request channel. Most Garrett County state parks (Deep Creek Lake, Swallow Falls, Herrington Manor) allow leashed dogs on hiking trails year-round; no dogs on the swim beaches Memorial Day through Labor Day.
