Donner Memorial State ParkThe 1918 Pioneer Monument, a museum of the Donner Party and transcontinental railroad, and a swimming beach on Donner Lake outside Truckee

An alpine park at the west edge of Truckee, set at about 6,000 feet where the Donner Party was trapped in the winter of 1846–47. Its centerpiece is the Pioneer Monument — a bronze atop a 22-foot pedestal (the snow depth that winter) dedicated in 1918 as California Historical Landmark #134. The visitor center tells the story of the emigrants, the Washoe people, and the Chinese workers who built the transcontinental railroad, while Donner Lake's day-use beach, the Lakeside Interpretive Trail, and the Emigrant Trail draw summer swimmers, paddlers, and hikers.

About the park

Welcome to Donner Memorialwhere history meets the lake.

Donner Memorial State Park sits at the west edge of Truckee at roughly 6,000 feet, in the glacier-carved Truckee Basin where the Donner Party was stranded during the brutal winter of 1846–47. The park preserves the site and tells its story, alongside the broader history of westward emigration over the Sierra. It's 100 miles east of Sacramento via Interstate 80, just off the freeway on the south side of town.

The centerpiece is the Pioneer Monument: a bronze pioneer family standing atop a 22-foot stone pedestal — the depth of the snow that trapped the emigrants — dedicated on June 6, 1918 by the Native Sons of the Golden West and designated California Historical Landmark #134. It was comprehensively restored in 2022. The visitor center's exhibits illuminate the Emigrant Experience, the Donner Party, the land of the Washoe people who call Donner Lake 'Little Eye,' the Chinese laborers who built the transcontinental railroad, and early auto travel over Donner Pass.

In summer the park is also a lake park: a day-use beach on Donner Lake with picnic tables and fishing, the accessible 1.4-mile Lakeside Interpretive Trail to China Cove, the half-mile Nature Trail past the historic Murphy Cabin site, and over eight miles of trails total — including the Emigrant Trail in Coldstream Canyon that connects to the Pacific Crest Trail. The 154-site campground books out for summer weekends. Bring a layer; nights drop to the low 40s even in July.

  • The Pioneer Monument

A bronze pioneer family atop a 22-foot pedestal — the snow depth of the winter of 1846–47 — dedicated in 1918 as California Historical Landmark #134 and restored in 2022. It stands on the spot where the Schallenberger and later Breen cabin once sheltered the trapped emigrants.

  • High Sierra Crossing Museum

The visitor center's exhibits trace the Emigrant Experience, the Donner Party, the Washoe people, the Chinese workers who built the transcontinental railroad, and early motoring over Donner Pass. Open daily 10 AM – 5 PM; plan about an hour, included with day-use parking.

  • Donner Lake day-use beach

A lakeside day-use area with picnic tables, a swim beach, fishing, and restrooms (summer only), on a lake the Washoe call Behé·ziŋ wí·giya, 'Little Eye.' Charcoal and wood fires are prohibited; propane and gas grills are allowed.

  • Lakeside Interpretive Trail

An accessible, packed-gravel trail of about 1.4 miles hugging the southern shore of Donner Lake to China Cove, lined with interpretive panels on the area's natural and cultural history. Dogs are allowed here on a six-foot leash, unlike the Nature Trail.

  • Emigrant Trail & PCT connection

Park land in Coldstream Canyon to the south contains the alignment of the primary Emigrant Trail, which links to U.S. Forest Service trails and the Pacific Crest Trail. The starting point for a longer backcountry day from over eight miles of park trails.

  • Nature Trail & Murphy Cabin site

A half-mile packed-gravel loop through pine and fir and along a boardwalk over Donner Creek, passing the historic Murphy Cabin site where members of the Donner Party wintered. A self-guided tour sheet is available in the visitor center; no pets on this trail.

  • Lakeside camping & paddling

A 154-site campground with picnic tables, hot showers, and bear-resistant lockers, open Memorial Day to mid-September. Kayak, canoe, and paddleboard the lake from the day-use shore; free ranger-led paddling tours run through the Sierra State Parks Foundation.
