Five rugged islands and the surrounding Pacific waters off the coast of Ventura — Anacapa, Santa Cruz, Santa Rosa, San Miguel, and Santa Barbara — protected as a national park since March 5, 1980 and a UNESCO Biosphere Reserve since 1976. Home to 145 species found nowhere else on Earth, including the island fox, the island scrub-jay, and giant coreopsis. Reachable only by Island Packers boat (one to three hours from Ventura Harbor) or Channel Islands Aviation flight to Santa Rosa.
The Channel Islands have been called "the Galapagos of North America" because their isolation has produced 145 species and subspecies that exist nowhere else — the island fox (one of the world's smallest canids), the island scrub-jay (the most range-restricted bird in the continental U.S.), the island night lizard, and giant coreopsis among them. The Chumash people inhabited the islands for at least 13,000 years; archaeological middens at Daisy Cave on San Miguel are among the oldest known sites of human occupation in North America. The park was first designated a national monument in 1938, expanded into a national park on March 5, 1980, and declared a UNESCO Biosphere Reserve in 1976.
Anacapa, the closest island, is actually three small islets — East, Middle, and West Anacapa — anchored at the eastern tip by Arch Rock, a 40-foot-tall natural sea bridge that's the unofficial logo of the park. The 1932 Anacapa Light, still operating, sits on East Anacapa above a 1.5-mile loop trail past Inspiration Point. Santa Cruz is the largest island in California (96 square miles) and home to Scorpion Ranch, the Painted Cave (a quarter-mile-long sea cave, one of the largest in the world), and the only island scrub-jay population on Earth.
Plan a full day for any island trip — Island Packers boats leave Ventura Harbor in the morning and don't return until late afternoon. Santa Cruz Scorpion Anchorage is the most popular destination for first-time visitors: the boat lands in a sheltered cove with hiking trails to Cavern Point and Potato Harbor, swimming in the kelp forest, and ranger-led tide pool walks. Bring layered clothing — even on warm mainland days the islands can be windy, foggy, and 15°F cooler. Whale-watching season runs December–April (gray whales) and June–September (humpbacks and blue whales).
A short loop through the exhibits, encounters, and shows that make this stop worth a half-day on its own.
The 40-foot natural sea arch at the eastern tip of Anacapa — the most-photographed landmark in the park and the official park logo. Reached by Island Packers' one-hour boat ride from Ventura, then a 157-step staircase up from the landing dock. The 1.5-mile East Anacapa loop trail circles past the 1932 lighthouse, Inspiration Point, and Cathedral Cove.
One of the largest sea caves in the world — a quarter-mile-long cavern on Santa Cruz's northwest coast, accessible only by kayak or Zodiac. The entrance is 130 feet tall; the interior walls are stained red, orange, and green by lichens and algae. Channel Islands Adventure Company runs guided kayak tours from Scorpion Anchorage May through September.
The four-pound island fox — found only on six of the eight Channel Islands — recovered from 15 wild individuals in 2004 to over 4,000 today, the fastest mammal recovery under the Endangered Species Act. They roam the campgrounds at Scorpion Ranch on Santa Cruz and the East Anacapa picnic area; do not feed or pet them.
The historic 1880s Justinian Caire ranch, now the most visited landing site in the park. Free ranger talks at the visitor center, hikes to Cavern Point (2 miles round trip) and Potato Harbor (5 miles round trip), and a sheltered cove for swimming and snorkeling in the kelp forest. The campground sits in a eucalyptus grove a quarter-mile from the pier.
The 1,470-square-mile Channel Islands National Marine Sanctuary surrounds the park — giant kelp forests grow up to two feet a day, sheltering 60 species of fish including the bright-orange Garibaldi (California's state marine fish). Snorkeling at Scorpion Anchorage and Smugglers Cove is excellent June through October when water clarity peaks at 30 feet.
The Santa Barbara Channel is the migration corridor for the Pacific gray whale (December–April, ~20,000 individuals each way) and a feeding ground for humpbacks and the world's largest blue whales (June–September). Island Packers runs dedicated 3-hour whale-watching trips from Ventura Harbor, and most island-bound boats see whales en route in season.
Santa Rosa Island has the only backcountry beach camping in the park — 15 designated sites along Water Canyon Beach, available by permit August 15 through December 31 only (to protect nesting western snowy plovers the rest of the year). $15/night. Reach Santa Rosa via the 25-minute Channel Islands Aviation flight from Camarillo Airport.
Archaeological evidence at Daisy Cave on San Miguel Island documents human occupation back at least 11,800 years — among the oldest paleocoastal sites in North America. The Chumash and their ancestors lived on the islands until the early 1820s. Park rangers lead interpretive walks discussing Chumash plank canoe (tomol) navigation and seasonal village patterns.
Park is open year-round, but access is by boat or plane only — there are no roads to the islands. The Robert J. Lagomarsino Visitor Center in Ventura Harbor opens daily 8:30 AM–5:00 PM; closed Thanksgiving, Christmas, and New Year's Day. Island Packers boat schedules vary by season — fewer departures November through February, daily runs to Santa Cruz from spring through fall.
Note · Last boat back from Anacapa typically departs around 4:00 PM; from Santa Cruz around 4:30 PM. Day-trippers must be on the return — there's no overnight ferry service.
Per-person admission. Buy in advance to skip the gate line.
The park itself is free, but reaching it isn't — Island Packers (the official concessionaire since 1968) is the only public boat operator. Backcountry beach camping on Santa Rosa requires a separate permit August through December. Bring everything you need: there is no food, water, or supplies for sale on any island except snacks at Island Packers' Scorpion Anchorage stand on weekends.
