Located about a two minute drive away from Caples Lake, Kirkwood Inn & Saloon is a great place to grab some food before or after a day of fun at the Lake. Visitors love the rustic ambience and the generous portions or traditional American food. Breakfast and dinner are both served, as well as drinks.

 Sorensen's Country Cafe

Soresen’s Cafe is a great dining option for breakfast, lunch, or dinner, about a 20 minute drive up Highway 88 from Kirkwood. The food is delicious and the wine list is extensive. Visitor favorites include the beef burgundy stew, the BBQ chicken, and the homemade desserts.

 

 Hope Valley Cafe and Market

At Hope Valley Cafe and Market, you’ll be able to enjoy a beautiful view of the Carson River while you eat. Located at the Hope Valley Resort and right next to Sorensen’s, this cafe has some scrumptious eats and a good selection of beer on tap. Make sure to save room for dessert; the owner spends all day baking cookies and pies that are to die for.

 Kit Carson Silver Lake Boat Rentals

Silver Lake is another beautiful spot to enjoy swimming, fishing, and watersports. It’s located about eight miles south of Kirkwood, off of Highway 88. Boats, kayaks, canoes, and more can be rented from Kit Carson Silver Lake Boat Rentals.

 Kirkwood Sierra Outfitters

This company offers an unforgettable horseback riding experience. Jim and Karen Hagen, the experienced and friendly guides, will share their knowledge of the area with you over a leisurely half or full day trip. Reservations are required, as they usually only offer one ride per day.

Guided hikes off the Kirkwood chair lift are available on the weekend and will take you on a scenic tour of the alpine meadows around Kirkwood. More information is available at the High Alpine Adventure Center.

 Self-Guided Hikes

Kirkwood offers a multitude of trails for hikers of all skill levels and ages. “Peak Hikes” will lead you to high alpine meadows with gorgeous summit views and “Lake Hikes” will lead you to breathtakingly beautiful alpine lakes.  Mountain Biking

 

 Kirkwood Mountain Bike Park

Kirkwood Mountain Bike Park offers some great terrain and amazing views of the Sierras. Many of the trails require you to take the lift, which is open on weekends from July 7 through September 2, although Dangberg Trail and Sentinels Trail are non-lift accessible. This disc (frisbee) golf course stretches throughout the trees and terrain of the Red Cliffs area and is known as one the most challenging disc golf courses in Northern California. The best part about it is it’s free! Scorecards and course maps can be picked up at the Kirkwood General Store.

Zip Tahoe, located at the top of Kirkwood Chair 7, offers a course of scenic sky bridges and thrilling zipline rides. Canopy station decks are in place for those who are afraid of heights and their friendly guides provide all the necessary safety equipment.

Kirkwood Mountain Resort

Located at the top of the Sierra Crest, Kirkwood Mountain is situated to receive large amounts of the driest and lightest snow in the area, which makes it great for skiing and snowboarding. Elevations range between 7,800 and 9,800 feet and the mountain has over 2,300 acres of terrain and 14 lifts. Whether you’re looking for shoots, bowls, tree skiing, or glade skiing, you’ll find it at Kirkwood.

Grover Hot Springs is the ideal place to relax and soothe your sore muscles after a long day on the slopes. The park features one hot pool, fed by six mineral springs, and one cool pool, both of which feature spectacular views of the Sierra Peaks. The park is open year round, except for the days of Christmas, New Years, and Thanksgiving, the last two weeks of September, and in the event of a major thunderstorm.
